The holidays are fast approaching and, if you're like me, you probably haven't done your shopping yet. But it's okay! You still have time! And if you have a book lover to buy for, I've got some great ideas for you!
Young Adult - The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
I reviewed this book earlier, and it is honestly one of the greatest works of fiction I have ever read. John Green is a fantastic and hugely talented writer. The Fault in Our Stars is incredible, and readers of all ages would enjoy reading it.
Chick Lit - The Heather Wells series by Meg Cabot
The Heather Wells series (Size 12 is Not Fat, Size 14 is Not Fat Either, Big Boned, Size 12 and Ready to Rock) is really fun to read. Heather is a former teen pop star and current residence hall director at New York College. Weird and mysterious things keep happening (murders, thefts, etc.), and Heather plays Nancy Drew and tries to solve the crimes. These books are funny, relatable, and interesting. Meg Cabot knows how to write an entertaining book. BONUS: The next book in the series comes out in January, so there won't be any waiting if anyone flies through the series and wants more!
Sci-fi/Fantasy - Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Somehow, Neverwhere manages to make you laugh, shudder, hold your breath in excitement, and fall in love all at the same time. It's impossible to put down. Gaiman creates an incredible alternate reality and really fascinating characters. The plot and all of its twistiness will keep readers on the edge of their seats!
Humor - Bossypants by Tina Fey
I love Tina Fey. I think she's a comedic genius and a really awesome role model for girls everywhere. She's just awesome, and her memoir, Bossypants, is just as hilarious as she is. She discusses he life growing up, what it was like to write and be on Saturday Night Live, her family, 30 Rock, and tons of other stuff. And she does it all with wit and charm. I was laughing the entire time I read this book, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes to laugh.
Mystery - The Lake of Dead Languages by Carol Goodman
This was the first book I read by Carol Goodman, and it got me hooked. She does a great job of writing mystery novels that aren't predictable. I've found that a lot of mystery novels written by the same author always follow the same pattern, but this one is completely unique. You spend the whole book not knowing who the culprit is, and Goodman lets you in on her characters' secrets very gradually, making you want to stick around and find out more.
Other Ideas
E-readers
People have a lot of conflicting opinions on e-readers. Some love them, others hate the idea of them. I've had two e-readers (the original Kindle and the Nook Color) and, generally, I've really enjoyed having one. The Kindle was a little hard for me to get used to, but with the new touchscreen versions of the Kindle Fire and Nook Color/Tablet, you can swipe the screen with your finger and it actually looks like (and feels more similar to) turning a page. I'll always prefer paper books, but having an e-reader is really handy for travel and for getting books when you don't live near any book stores.
Word Games
Scrabble. Words With Friends. Bananagrams. Word games are generally a hit with book lovers. We tend to enjoy anything that has to do with the written word, and there's nothing better than geeking out about words and being social at the same time!
Magnetic Poetry
This is a good one for college aged kids or aspiring writers. Magnetic poetry makes having a refridgerator a lot more fun. Magnetic poetry consists of a bunch of random words on little magnets that you can arrange to form poetic verses (or anything you feel like writing). It's generally inexpensive and makes a great stocking stuffer!
Gift Cards
As always, if you can't pick a specific book or gift, there are always gift cards! Try to buy gift cards for locally owned book stores so you can support local businesses while also making someone's holiday a happy one!
